Entitled – Brussels. The Hotel De Ville.
From a Photo by Stengel & Markert, Dresden.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Brussels. – The capital of Belgium is an eight hours’ journey from Paris, over the Northern of France and Belgian State Railways. Brussels is partly built on a hill 220ft. high, and partly on a flat, through which the Senne flows. It is the chief seat of public instruction and industry, and is remarkable for the number and richness of its ancient buildings, and also for the elegance of its new quarters, which place Brussels among the foremost cities of Europe. The population is 450,000, including ten suburbs; and there are about 2,000 English residents in the Quartier Leopold. The city is divided into upper and lower sections, the former containing the Royal Palace, the Government offices, and the finest streets and hotels. The chief squares are the Place Royale; Place de la Monnaie – containing the mint, theatre, and exchange; and the Grand Place in the lower town, in which is the Hotel de Ville, a noble Gothic edifice, with a tower 370ft. high, surmounted by a vane consisting of a gilded metal statue of the Archangel Michael, 16ft. high. In the grand hall here Charles V. signed his abdication, in 1555. The present modern buildings are the Palace of the Chambers, the King’s Palace, and the Palace of Fine Arts, formerly the residence of the Dukes of Brabant and of the Austrian Governors-General. The old Palace of the Prince of Orange, the Church of Notre Dame de Bon Secours, and that of the Grand Beguinage are also worth seeing. This by no means exhausts the list of Brussels’ noble buildings. There is the Cathedral of Ste. Gudule; the old Broot Huys, with its quaint gates and walls; and the Churches of Notre Dames des Victoires and Notre Dams de la Chapelle.
