Entitled – Buenos Ayres. The Plaza Victoria.

From a Photo by A. Lundstrom.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Buenos Ayres. – The appearance of the city is monotonous and dismal, the majority of the streets being only 40ft. wide, with high houses, and each block, or manzana, covering an area of about four acres.

There are eighty-three streets, of which fifty-two run from north to south, the others crossing at right angles; they have an average length of three miles.

The above view shows one of the most important squares – the Plaza de la Victoria –  in which are situated the Government offices, the buildings of the Legislature, the Custom House, the Cathedral, the Archiepiscopal Palace, the Colon Theatre, and the Bolsa, or Exchange.

The Cathedral stands on the site of a chapel built by Garay, in 1580, in which were employed the first bricks made in the country.

It was rebuilt in the following century, with two towers, but fell down in 1752, when the architect Rocha erected the present magnificent church, which is 315ft. long, 144ft. wide, and capable of containing 9,000 persons.

The exterior has a portico of twelve Corinthian pillars facing the grand square.

The interior is stately, having twelve side altars, the highest being under the dome, which rises to a height of 115ft.

Attached to the Cathedral is a spacious episcopal palace.

Palermo Park, two miles north of the city, is the great suburban rendezvous of wealth, beauty, and fashion, on Sunday and Thursday afternoons.

It was laid out by President Sarmiento in 1872.

The Casa Rosada, or Government House, is erected on the spot where Juan de Garay built his fort in 1580.

The Bolsa, or Exchange, is a magnificent building erected in 1885; it has an area of 3,600 square yards.
