Entitled – Calais. – The Hotel De Ville and the Old Watch-Tower.
From a Photo by the London Stereoscopic Co.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Calais. – The London, Chatham, and Dover Company’s boat takes about one hour and twenty minutes to cross to Calais; but, short as the journey is, we instantly realize on landing that we are in a foreign country. Calais is a fortress of the first class, and contains 56,867 people, including the suburb of St. Pierre les Calais, which was united to Calais in 1885. Moreover, about 260,000 travellers pass through the town every year. The defences consist of a huge castle, several forts, and an arrangment of sluices whereby the whole of the surrounding country can be laid under water. The harbour was vastly improved by new works, which cost £1,500,000. In the great square – which is depicted in our reproduction – is the Hotel de Ville and an elegant belfry, 118ft. high. To the left in the square stands an old watch-tower, which was used as a lighthouse until 1848; the new lighthouse, by the way, is 190ft. high. The town is clean and well built, and the Public Library contains 15,000 volumes. The chief church, that of Notre Dame, has been renovated since 1866. There are in Calais about 1,500 English residents, who are chiefly engaged in the tulle trade, which was introduced from Nottingham in 1818. It may, perhaps, be as well to mention here that the best time to visit Northern France is the spring. The first-class railway fare is about eighteen centimes per English mile, and the third-class, eight centimes. Express trains never exceed 35 or 45 miles an hour.
