Entitled – Horghjem. The Troldtinderne Peaks, Horghjem.
From a Photo by Poulton & Son.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Horghjem. – This magnificent mountain district is reached from Molde by the overland route to Naes, in the Romsdal. Leaving Molde, one drives along the charming Fanestrand, shaded by a fine avenue of trees. To the left are some fine villas belonging to rich merchants; to the right, an excellent view over the Fanefjord, with the snow-capped mountains of the Romsdal in the background. The Romsdal is one of the best known of the grand Norwegian valleys. The road lies near several farmhouses, pleasantly situated in birch groves, and in full view of the Romsdalshorn, 4,965ft. high. On our other hand we have the lofty peaks of the Troldtinderne (5,880ft.), whose serrated heights are by no means unknown to famous Alpine climbers. The accompanying illustration may possibly convey some idea of the majesty of these mighty mountains. The carriole of some adventure-loving Briton is seen in the foreground. The road at Horghjem continues on the right bank of a turbulent river amid huge boulders of rock that have been brought down by winter avalanches. The scene is considered one of the grandest of its kind in the world. Further on one sees the Mongefos Waterfall, descending from the Mongejura, which is 4,230ft. high. Here the River Rauma forms a small island, which is traversed by the new road. Having climbed to the isolated summit of the Storhoetten Mountain in about 3 and a half hours, the painstaking tourist is rewarded with a view of a vast range of snowy peaks extending for 55 miles before him – the Romsdalshorn and the Troldtinderne standing forth on the right, while behind are seen the gloomy wastes of the Dovrefjeld.
