Entitled – Montreal. Victoria Square.

From a Photo by Notman & Son, Montreal.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Montreal. – This is a four hours’ journey from Ottawa.

It is the largest city and chief commercial centre of the Dominion.

Montreal is situated on the south-east side of the triangular island of the same name, formed by two of the branches into which the Ottawa divides.

It derives its name from Mont Real, or Mount Royal, a hill 900ft. above the level of the sea.

In 1891 Montreal contained 216,650 inhabitants; the present population, however, is rather more than 270,000.

The French mainly occupy the eastern quarters of the city, the dividing line being the St. Lawrence Main Street.

The streets in the lower part of the town are irregular, narrow, and dingy, but those of the upper part are broad and well kept.

The chief business streets with the best shops are Notre Dame Street, St. James’s Street, and St. Catherine Street, all running parallel with the River St. Lawrence.

At the south side of the Place d’Armes, in the business quarter of the city, stands the Gothic church of Notre Dame, erected in 1824.

This is one of the largest ecclesiastical edifices in America, being 250ft. long and 135ft. wide.

The town towers are 227ft. in height; and the church will easily contain a congregation of 10,000 persons.

Our view shows Victoria Square, which occupies the site of the old hay-market, and embellised with a colossal bronze statue of Queen Vicoria.

On the hill – Mont Real – is a series of gently sloping terraces, which afford a spendid view of the noble River St. Lawrence.
