Entitled – Mundal. Mundal, on the Fjaerlandsfjord.
From a Photo by Poulton & Son.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Mundal. – Here is a typical and exceptionally fine Norwegian view, on a branch of the Sognefjord. Strange as it may seem, there is in this old-world spot an hotel which accommodates seventy guests. Splendid views can be obtained from the veranda of the hotel; and one can drive to within two or three miles of either of the two great glaciers. If the steamer from Balholmen does not suit the tourist, he can go by row-boat direct to Mundal. Presently the steamer enters the beautiful Sogndalsfjord and calls at Sogndalsfjoeren, which is surrounded by high mountain peaks, the Storhongen and the Skriken on the south, and the stately Njukden on the north. These mountains are easily ascended, although they are from 3,000ft. to 4,000ft. high. Here, also, are a number of substantially-built farmhouses, several orchards, and a wooden church. From Sogndalsfjoeren the steamer glides back out of the Sogndalsfjord and crosses the main fjord into the Aurlandsfjord. The scenery is at first dreary and monotonous until the vessel reaches Breisnaes, where the mighty peak Steganosi towers on high 6,000ft. above the fjord. Further along, other mountains rise from the water, scarcely leaving room for a patch of earth or a cottage. To the west of the Aurlandsfjord, the Naersfjord branches off, and this latter is numbered among the most picturesque fjords of Norway. On every side the mountains rise to a height of from 5,000ft. to 6000ft., till their snow-capped crests almost seem to meet. The really immense waterfalls and cascades which fall down from unseen icefields appear like streaks on the bare face of the gigantic rock, while the awful roar of the falling waters is softened by the great distance into a pleasing murmur.
