Entitled – Niagara. General View of the Falls.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Niagara. – Steamers leave Toronto six times daily during the summer season for the far-famed Falls of Niagara, the return trip across Lake Ontario costing but two dollars. The distance is about 42 miles, of which 35 miles are on the Lake of Ontario and seven miles on the Niagara River. The Falls of Niagara (“Thunder of Waters”), perhaps the most greatest and most impressive of the natural wonders of America, are situated on the Niagara River, 22 miles from its head, in Lake Erie, and 14 miles above its mouth in Lake Ontario. This river forms the outlet to the four great western lakes, Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior, and descends about 330ft. in its course of 36 miles. Its current is swift for about two miles after leaving Lake Erie, but becomes more gentle as the channel widens, and is divided into two parts by Grand Island, below which the stream is 2 and a half miles wide. About 15 miles from Lake Erie the river narrows again, and the rapids begin, flowing with ever increasing speed, until in the last three-quarters of a mile above the Falls they descend 55ft., and flow with fearful velocity. On the brink of the falls, where the river bends out at right angles from west to north, the channel is again divided by Goat Island, which occupies about a quarter of the entire width of the river (4,750ft.). To the right is the American Fall, 1,060ft. wide and 167ft. high, and to the left of it is the terrific Canadian or Horseshoe Fall, 158ft. high and with a contour of 3,010ft. The volume of water which pours over the Falls is 15,000,000 cubic feet per minute, of which probably nine-tenths go over the Canadian Fall, which is shown in our illustration. It is estimated about 400,000 tourists visit Niagara Falls yearly.
