Entitled – Oporto. Panorama of the City.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Oporto. – From Lisbon to Oporto, a distance of 337 miles, is a railway journey of one day (ten hours by express train).

This town has a population of moe than 109,000, including the four suburbs.

Oporto is situated five miles from the sea, on the slopes of the two hills Da Se and Da Victoria.

The town is divided into three districts and covers an area of two miles; its thickly-grouped buildings rise in amphitheatre, with portions overhanging the beautiful river and its partly-wooded banks.

Oporto is full of life and prosperity; many of the streets are broad and handsome, but the majority are ill-paved, dirty, and steep – so steep, in fact, that there are very few vehicles.

The Rua das Flores is the best street in the city, and it is lined with the shops of cloth merchants and goldsmiths.

On a steep crag, rising over the broad Rua Nova dos Inglezes, is seen the Palace of the Bishop; and in the Calzada dos Clerigos is a fine tower, 210ft. high, from the summit of which one obtains a splendid view.

Perhaps the most interesting street is the Rua das Hortas, where one may admire the richly gilt and painted balconies of the houses.

Though spacious, the harbour is seldom safe for vessels drawing more than 16ft. of water, and at the entrance is seen the Castle of S. Joao de Foz, from which a ledge of rocks and sandy banks extends south-west.

The celebrated wine stores (armazens) are situated in the suburb of Villanova da Gaza.

The average export amounts to 35,428 pipes a year, of which 24,294 are sent exclusively to the United Kingdom.

The vintages of the Upper Douro may be estimated, on an average, at between 70,000 and 80,000 pipes.
