Below the picture an inscription reads:

Paris. – ranged on 37 miles of shelves. Also in the fashionable quarter of Paris is the famous Church of the Madeleine; the fine Boulevard Malesherbes; the Place des Victoires, in which are the Bank of France and an equestrian statue of Louis XIV. ; Place Vendome, with its triumphal bronze column; Place Bastille, containing the Colonne de Juliet, 154ft. high, erected on the site of the old Bastille; the Place du Trone, and its triumphal arch; the Rue de la Paix, and the Rue Castiglione. The finest and most fashionable promenades are the Boulevards and the Champs Elysees, at the western end of which is the Trimphal arch of l’Etoile; the famous Bois de Boulogne, the Place de Carrousel, and the Garden of the Tuileries. On the left bank of the Seine is the Boulevard St. Germain, which is the chief residence of the haute noblesse; also the Pays Latin, where the chief educational establishments are situated, and the Sorbonne University. The principal public buildings on this side are the Palace of the Luxembourg; the Fontaine St. Michel, a marble structure 82ft. high; the Palace of Fine Arts; the Odeon; the Assemblie Nationale; the Observatory, at the end of the Boulevard de Sebastopol, with its library of 45,000 volumes; the Mint, which has a museum of coins, medals, and dies, dating from Charles VIII. ; the colossal Pantheon, formerly intended for a church; and the great military hospital, Hotel des Invalides, which accommodates 5,000 men. The Paris Jardin d’Acclimatation was established in 1860. It covers fifty acres and contains twenty-five hothouses, wherein plants are reared for the parks and public gardens. Not the least interesting feature of the gay capital of Europe is the State pawnshop, the Monte de Piete. Charity is administered by the Assistance Publique, whose staff numbers 2,200.
