Entitled – Port Chalmers. The Town and the Harbour.

From a Photo by De Mans, Port Chalmers, N.Z.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Port Chalmers. – This is the beautiful port of Dunedin, the chief town of Otago, from which Port Chalmers is distant eight miles.

The trip from Wellington to this place is accomplished in two days by the steamers of the United Steamship Company of New Zealand.

From Port Chalmers and its vicinity the tourist in this far-off yet familiar-seeming land proceeds to the Cold Lake District by rail and  coach.

The grandeur and unrivalled scenery of these southern lakes and the mountains that surround them can only be appreciated by the actual spectator.

In the past they have, with the exception of Lake Wakatipu, been somewhat difficult of access, but now they are all connected with the railway system by good and regular coach services.

Each also now possesses a steamer or steam-launch, so that the various arms or bays can now be visited in safety and comfort.

The most southerly of the group, Lake Manapouri, covers an area of some 50 square miles, and is diversified by numerous islands, and arms running in all directions, the banks wooded right down to the water’s edge.

This lake is entirely surrounded by mountains, the Hunter Range rising 6,000ft. and the Spire Peaks, Like its neighbour, Manapouri, it is walled in by mountains covered with dense forests right up to the snow-line.

The Middle Fiord of this lake, with its enchanting group of islands at the entrance, forms a lovely picture; but the greatest natural beauties lie at the head of the lake.
