Entitled – The Rhine (The Castle of Rheinstein).

From a Photo by Frith & Co.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

The Rhine (The Castle of Rheinstein). – Here is a typical view on the picturesque Rhine.

A little above the venerable Church of Clemenscapelle, and on the same bank, rises the great Castle of Rheinstein, which, though its precise origin is unknown, is mentioned as early as 1279; after the year 1348 it became the residence of the Archbishop of Treves.

In 1825, Prince Frederick of Prussia caused the Castle to be restored, and he himself was afterwards interred in the chapel on the south side.

Shady promenades lead hence to Bingerbruck, a lovely village of 1,100 inhabitants.

We may take this opportunity of giving a few facts concerning the world-famous Rhine.

Living is cheap enough in the Rhenish provinces, and a person enjoying a walking tour need spend no more than 9s. a day.

It is interesting to note, too, that the railways are conducted in a delightfully leisurely manner, and a fourth-class carriage, without seats, is provided for the very poor.

The Rhine is navigated by about 100 steamers, ranging in size from the local vessel of fifteen or twenty tons, to powerful tug-steamers of 400 tons.

During the last few years, upwards of a million passengers have been carried annually.

The steamers, however, are apt to be unpunctual, owing to the fogs that prevail.

The length of the Rhine from Bale to the German Ocean is 526 miles; and its depth between Cologne and Dusseldorf, from 12ft. to 66ft.

At Bale the Rhine is 189yds. wide, and at Bonn, 532yds.

The finest Rhenish wines come from the Rheingau, a district fifteen miles long.
