Entitled – Adelaide. Rundle Street.
From a Photo by York & Son.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Adelaide. – The capital of South Australia is reached from Melbourne in seventeen hours by the Victorian and South Australian Railays.
This city was founded in 1836, and called after the wife of William IV. It was laid out by Colonel Light in 1837, and is built nearly in the form
of a square, with the usual broad, tree-planted streets. The city consists of two portions – North and South Adelaide. Of these, the latter is the business quarter, while the former is principally used for residential purposes. A strip of park land, half a mile wide, separates these two secions
of the city, through the centre of which runs the River Torrens, spanned by five massive iron bridges. The river has been dammed hereabouts,
so that a beautiful wide sheet of water, two miles in length, has been thrown back, affording ample room for those who may wish to indulge in boating. Visitors to this charming city are at once struck by the substantial background formed by the Mount Lofty range of hills of which,
Mount Lofty, attains a height of 2,400ft. above the sea-level. The population of Adelaide, according to the last census, is 133,252.
Hindley Street, Rundle Street, and the more northern portion of King William Street, are the leading thoroughfares.
Four important daily papers are published in Adelaide, and a special Press boat is employed to collect the news from passing mail steamers.
The Government House stands in an inclosure of about 10 acres. It was occupied by the Duke of Edinburgh (now Coburg) on the occasion
of his visit here in 1867. The chief port of this province is Port Adelaide, eight miles to the north-west of the city.
