Entitled – Buenos Ayres. La Boca.
From a Photo by A. Lundstrom.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Buenos Ayres. – The journey from Monte Video to Buenos Ayres is not a pleasing one, even if one travels by the fine vessels of the Royal Mail Line. The traveller reaches Buenos the day after touching at Monte Video. The actual city covers about 11,000 acres of land, but the official city has an area of about 46,000 acres. Buenos Ayres is now divided into twelve parishes, besides the suburbs of Flores and Belgrano, and contains four Protestant and twenty-five Catholic churches. In all parts of the city, and more especially in the vicinity of La Boca – according to one traveller, “the foulest, vilest purlieu of the capital” – there are numerous conventillos, or common lodging-houses, in which human beings are crowded together in a manner unknown even in the worst slums of London. Some of these dreadful rookeries contain as many as 150 or 200 apartments. Many of those in the Boca district are built of wood, on piles driven into a green, noisome soil, above which they are sufficiently raised to protect them from the occasional inundations to which the district is subject. Listen to the plaint of a horrified traveller : “The air was deafened by the hiss and creak and rattle of machinery, trains, and lumbering vehicles; the hooting of tram horns, the shrill whistle of the police, the hum of myriads of insects, the murmur of voices, the incessant barking of villainous dogs, and, above all, the peculiar, metallic, ear-splitting chirp of the tree-frogs – like the squeaking of a thousand ungreased cart-wheels. Such, with its forest of masts and its polluted river, was he Boca and its unsavoury neighbourhood.
