Entitled – Salt Lake City. The Assembly Hall,

Tabernacle, and Mormon Temple.
From a Photo by C. R. Savage.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Salt Lake City. – If the traveller leaves San Francisco at six o’clock on Monday evening, he will arrive at “The Zion of the Latter-Day Saints” at about eight o’clock on the following Wednesday morning. This city sits enthroned, like a queen of the mountains and valleys, upon an ancient beach of the great lake, about 100ft. above the present level of its waters, and 4,350ft. above the sea. On the east the quaint Wahsatch Mountains, towering from six to eight thousand feet above it, form a background unsurpassed in grandeur. To the west and north-west, gleaming and glistening like a mighty mirror in the sunshine – which is here undimmed 315 days out of the year – lies the great, silent Salt Lake, with the Oquirrh Mountains dabbling their golden feet in its southern brim. Along both sides of every street in Salt Lake City flow streams of sparkling mountain water; and every house is surrounded by gardens, orchards, and green lawns, so that one looks in vain for a poor man’s home. The streets are 132ft. wide, and are shaded by grand old trees, many of which bear fruit or blossom. The Temple Block stands first among the things to be seen. It is a ten-acre square, surrounded by a massive wall, 15ft. high and 5ft. thick. In it stand the magnificent Mormon Temple, the Tabernacle, and the Assembly Hall. The Temple cost over 6,000,000dols., and is built wholly of snow-white granite from the Cottonwood Canon. It is 200ft. long, 100ft. wide, and 100ft. high, with four towers, one at each corner, 220ft. in height. The Tabernacle, which is just west of the Temple in the same square, is built of iron, glass, and stone. It is 250ft. long, 150ft. wide, and 100ft. high in the centre of the roof, which is a single mighty arch.
