Entitled – Teneriffe. General View, showing the Peak.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Teneriffe. – After having explored Zanzibar we at last turn our face homewards, first proceeding to Natal by the German East African Line, via Mozambique, Beira, and Delagoa Bay, in thirteen days. Leaving Natal, one of the splendid steamers of the Union Line lands us at Teneriffe, after a voyage of twenty-eight days, touching at East London, Algoa Bay, and Cape Town. Teneriffe is one of the Canary Islands, a Spanish group of seven or eight volcanic islands, lying off the West Coast of Africa, about 250 miles south of Madeira. It is shaped like a shoulder of mutton, and the famous Peak lies in the centre of the broadest part. The Peak of Teneriffe, whose majestic summit towers far above the layer of clouds that so often hangs about its buttresses, thrusts its snow-clad cone far up into the glittering sunlight, 12,192ft. above the sea. It must be understood that the whole island is little more than a long mountain ridge, with steeply sloping sides. Commencing with the narrow end at Anaga Point, where the ridge is sharpest, there is a depression and a broad saddle-back, or rather plain, at La Laguna, followed by a narrow and constantly rising cordillera running south-west and breaking at Pedro Gil into two walls, which form the boundaries of the Canadas, the name given to the undulating floor of the crater, eight miles broad, paved with pumice-stone and streaked with lava, from which the Peak itself rises. Teneriffe has several ports, but all the mail steamers touch at Santa Cruz. A few steamers touch at Orotava, but even the inter-insular boats do not run there regularly, the recognised route being to disembark at Santa Cruz and go right across the island.
