Entitled – Victoria. View from the Government Buildings.
From a Photo by Notman & Son, Montreal.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Victoria. – The distance from Yokohama to Vancouver is 4,500 miles, and the journey is accomplished by one of the splendid steamers of the Canadian Pacific line in from fourteen to sixteen days. The steamer first touches at Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, and the chief city of Vancouver Island. Victoria is delightfully situated on a small arm of the sea, commanding a superb view of the Straits of Georgia, the mountains of the mainland, and snowcapped Mount Baker in the distance. The population of the city is now about 25,000, and is very heterogeneous, including native-born Canadians, Britons, Americans, Italians, Frenchmen, Germans, Japanese, and 3,000 Chinese. Our view of the city was taken from the Government Buildings, which lie in a square adjoinbing James’s Bay, an arm of the harbour, and are passed on the way from the steamboat wharf to the centre of the town. In front stands a monument commemorating Sir James Douglas, the first Governor of the Colony. Victoria may be said to date from 1858, when the discovery of gold on the main-land brought a rush of miners from the south. Some of our own battle-ships may often be seen in the fine land-locked harbour of Esquimault, three miles to the south-west of Victoria, where the water is 36ft. deep. The dockyard of this naval station includes a magnificent dry dock, 430ft. long, 65ft. wide, and 26ft. deep. Victoria has the advantage of being the stopping-place of the Canadian Pacific steamers to and from Japan, China, and Australia. Steamers run daily between Victoria and Vancouver, a distance of seventy miles, the trip from city to city being through the beautiful clustered islands of the Straits of Georgia.
