Entitled – Amsterdam. The Mount Albans Tower.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Amsterdam. – Reception Hall is a very marvel of architecture, wholly unsupported by pillars, although its dimensions are 111ft. long, 52ft. wide, and 90ft. high. It is lined throughout with white Italian marble. The palace has a tower 187ft. high, and it was finished in 1655. The New Stadthuis, the Bourse, Royal Museum, and various docks are all worth a visit. The Nieuwe Kerk, founded in 1408, is 310ft. long and 210ft. across the transepts. The upper part rests upon 52 stone pillars, and is lighted by 75 large and magnificently painted windows. It contains the tomb of Admiral de Ruyter. The chief industry is the cutting of precious stones. Whole families work together at this until all hours of the night, and a single cutter can earn £8 a week. Naturally there is a very close bond of union between Amsterdam and Hatton Garden. In one year 1,538 vessels, with cargoes of 2,685,000 tons, entered Amsterdam; and during the same period 1,035 vessels, with cargoes of 1,630,000 tons, cleared at the port. Strange as it may sound, Amsterdam has more to fear from the wood-worm than from any invading army; in fact, the city, built on piles as it is, has more than once been threatened with demolition in this way. The Amsterdam Zoo is almost as large as our own. It covers 28 acres, and even a cursory visit takes three hours. One of the chief show-places, too, is the Ryks Museum, which covers three acres.
