Entitled – Marlborough House.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Marlborough House. – It is commonly the fashion in the households of wealthy and exalted personages to give certain apartments distinctive titles, such titles being usually suggested by the prevailing colour of the upholstery – as witness the “Blue,” “Yellow,” and “White” Drawing Rooms at Buckingham Palace. Or it may be that the appellation is suggested by the nature of the contents of the apartment, such as the splendid Indian Room at Lord Brassey’s magnificent mansion in Park Lane. Perhaps it is the example set by Her Majesty the Queen and the Prince of Wales that has initiated this custom of giving titles to certain apartments. For within the big mansion in Pall Mall that all the world knows as Marlborough House, there is also an Indian Room, literally stocked with Oriental trophies of every sort – monstrous carved tusks, jewelled daggers, inlaid ivory caskets, Damascened armour, quaint little tables, curved scimitars with gem-incrusted gold and silver hilts, and terrible-looking tigers’ heads. The greater part of these things was collected during the Prince of Wales’s tour in India in 1875. As everyone knows, His Royal Highness sailed from England on the 11th October and arrived at Bombay on the 8th of November. On his birthday he arrived at Baroda; on December lst in Ceylon; at Calcutta on the 23rd, and on the Christmas Eve he gave a gorgeous reception to the native potentates. During his tour an incredible number of presents were given and received, so that the Prince came back laden with the things shown in this view. Of course, he has since added to them, for every Oriental visitor brings presents with him.
