Entitled – Marlborough House.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Marlborough House. – Perhaps few people are aware that what may be described as the beginning of the National Gallery was first eshibited in the lower part of Marlborough House, shortly after the mansion was settled upon by the Prince of Wales. The upper rooms were set apart for the use of the Department of Practical Art, as well as a library, lecture-room, museum of manufactures, ornamental casts of the School of Design, etc. Here, in 1852, was designed the Duke of Wellington’s funeral car, which was subsequently exhibited to the public in a temporary building in the courtyard. Thus it will be seen that Marlborough House was at one time quite a show place; and, perhaps, this will account for the objection the Prince of Wales now has to the invasion of the mansion by visitors to London and sightseers generally. It should also be noted that the Prince objects to the intrusion of photographers as a body. Therefore, we are extremely fortunate in being able to present here a capital view of His Royal Highness’s study, or business room; where, it may be truly said, the Prince spends many a busy hour, for our future King has perhaps the largest correspondence of any man in the world, yet, notwithstanding this, every single communication receives his personal attention either directly or indirectly, whether it be a private letter from a personal friend – and it is the veriest platitude to say that the name of these is legion – or an appeal for pecuniary help from a deserving poor supplicant. Probably we shall never know how many generous epistles were penned at this desk, nor the number of the diplomatic messages sent across the seas in times of acute crises.
