Entitled – Pall Mall.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Pall Mall. – Pall Mall is the nearest approach in London to a street of palaces. Almost every social and political celebrity belongs to one or
other of the clubs that occupy the principal portion of its space. The “Army and Navy” and the “United Service” embrace all the men
illustrious in arms; while the Church and learning are represented by the “Athenaeum” and the “Oxford and Cambridge.” Fond as are the
people of this country of Gothic architecture, it still has no representative in Pall Mall. Here everything is classical, although the degree to
which the classical architecture is adhered to differs widely between the chaste Italian of the “Reform” and the florid display of its next-door neighbour, the “Carlton.” One blot in the street is the property of the nation. We refer to the War Office, which is altogether out of keeping
with the splendid clubs upon the same side of the way. The building is already doomed, and some day an edifice more worthy of its purpose
and surroundings will, no doubt, rise in its place. The London system of clubs, grouping as it does around Pall Mall, St. James’s and part of
Picccadilly, finds its outward expression in buildings that give dignity and beauty to the thoroughfare in which they stand, by their architectural splendour. The Guards’ Club, is the oldest now extant, having been established in 1813. The Army and Navy Club was completed in 1850, at a cost of nearly £100,000. The “Athenaeum,” at the south-west corner of Waterloo Place, was established in 1824, and the splendid Club House, built by
Mr. Decimus Burton, was opened about two years later. The number of ordinary members is fixed at 1,200. This club has reckoned amongst its members at least half of the illustrious names of the last half-century.
