Entitled – Brick Lane.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Brick Lane. – Here we have what may be truly called a typical street scene in the heart of the East-end of London. And, furthermore, this is precisely what the stranger will see if he strolls down from Fenchurch Street, through Aldgate and part of the Whitechapel Road, and turns into Osborn Street, which is continued by Brick Lane. Osborn Street is a wretched, squalid thoroughfare, leading directly out of the Whitechapel Road; and at the point where it terminates, Wentworth Street runs to the left and Old Montague street to the right. Brick Lane, up which we are looking in this view, runs from the end of Osborn Street to Columbia Market, Bethnal Green. The street consists for the most part of shops of the humblest possible kind, low public-houses, second-hand furniture shops; bootmakers, butchers, oilshops, and dining-rooms in which a whole dinner may be had for 2-1/2d. This long, teeming street is intersected by Finch Street, Osborn Place, Heneage Street, Booth Street, Hanbury Street, Thrawl Street, Fashion Street (1), Princelet Street, Little Bacon Street, and the Bethnal Green Road. Standing in a doorway, on the right-hand side in this view, we see a typical denizen of this district – a dangerous loafer in a deerstalker cap, who was probably regarding our artist with amused contempt at the moment this view was taken. We see half-dressed urchins, crowds of women marketing, and long lines of stalls – whereon goods are displayed at prices that would certainly amaze anyone accustomed to deal at the “Stores.” Of course, there is a dog, probably owned by no one in particular, but picking up a fairly good living by prowling round the meat stalls.
