Entitled – Great St. Helen’s.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Great St. Helen’s. – Close to Crosby Place, a low, timber-corbelled gateway leads out of Bishopsgate Street into Great St. Helen’s, where, from the noise and bustle of the great City thoroughfare, you suddenly enter upon the quiet of a secluded churchyard, filled in early spring with bright green foliage. Here in 1216 the Priory of the Nuns of St. Helen’s was founded by William Basing, Dean of St. Paul’s. The old Hall of the Nuns was only removed in 1799. In the church, the nuns had the north, and the parish the south, aisle. The Hall had been purchased by the Leather Sellers’ Company and used as a common hall until the above date. The Church of St. Helen’s, Bishopsgate, stands unrivalled among City churches for the spaciousness of its interior and the antiquity of its foundation. Tradition tells us that a church was erected here in memory of Helena, mother of Constantine. In 1633 a sum of £1,300 was laid out in repairing and beautifying this church – which, by the way, escaped the Great Fire. St. Helen’s is rectangular in plan, being 120ft. long, 52ft. broad and 38ft. high, its belfry, capped by turret and cupola, rising to a height of about 60ft. From the number of monuments connected with the City of London within its walls, this church has become a kind of Westminster Abbey for the City of London. The number of these monuments was greatly increased by the destruction, in 1874, of the ancient Church of St. Martin Outwich and the removal to St. Helen’s of all the tombs which it contained. The usual entrance is by the handsome Jacobean door on the south side of the building. The houses round about St. Helen’s are well deserving of notice. The Alms Houses, founded in 1551 by Sir Andrew Judde, and rebuilt in 1729, existed here till 1892.
