Entitled – Knightsbridge Barracks.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Knightsbridge Barracks. – On leaving Hyde Park Corner, proceeding towards Kensington, we leave St. George’s Hospital on the left and walk along a broad, handsome road, with Hyde Park on the right and a splendid terrace of mansions on the left, farther along. We soon reach Sloane Street, which leads to Chelsea; this thoroughfare was named after Sir Hans Sloane, physician and antiquary, whose collection formed the nucleus of the British Museum. Almost opposite Sloane Street is a fine entrance to the Park, namely, Albert Gate, marked by two immense mansions. That on the eastern side was built for Mr. George Hudson, “The Railway King,” and is now occupied by the French Embassy. Directly beyond, the road divides, the left-hand branch, leading to Brompton and South Kensington, and the right-hand – a narrow and unattractive road for the first quarter of a mile – to Kensington. Just here, where the Brompton Road turns off to the left, is Tattersall’s, the most celebrated auction mart for horses in the world. Here, too, is the great equestrian statue of Hugh Rose, Lord Strathnairn, by Mr. Onslow Ford, R.A. Further along, on the right, we come to Knightsbridge Barracks, seen in this view, and usually occupied by one of the regiments of the Guards. These barracks originally consisted of a range of dull, heavy, brick buildings, erected in 1794-5. In the centre of this extensive structure is an oblong parade ground, around which are apartments for the troopers placed over the stables. At the west end is a riding school and also a wing cut up into residences for the officers. New barracks were erected here in 1879-80. and are said to be the best of the kind in Europe.
