Entitled – St. James’s Square.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
St. James’s Square. – Standing as it does so near to “our Palace of St. James,” St. James’s Square was for many years the most fashionable square in London. And although fashion has to some extent migrated to Belgravia, it still retains much of its long-established character. This square dates from the time of Charles II., when the adjoining King Street and Charles Street were named in honour of the King; and York Street and Duke Street in honour of the Duke of York. In the centre of the square was a Gothic conduit, whose site is now occupied by a statue of William III., executed by the younger Bacon in 1808. This is the only existing monument of this Sovereign – who, by the way, has no tomb. Whole volumes might be written about this square. In front of No. 2, the house of Viscount Falmouth, are some iron posts made from French guns taken by Admiral Boscawen in a sea-fight off Cape Finisterre. No. 3 is the house of Earl Cowper, and contains a fine collection of pictures inherited by his grandfather from an aunt, the old Countess de Grey. Lord Egerton of Tatton’s House, No. 7, St. James’s Square, was bought with a successful lottery ticket. The large house at the south-eastern corner of the square, No. 31, has been. sincce 1684, the residence of the Dukes of Norfolk, who migrated hither from the Strand. Norfolk House was re-fronted in 1742, and the portico was added in 1824. Next to Norfolk House is, or was, the official town residence of the Bishops of London. It was re-built about the year 1820. This noble square now contains quite a number of important clubs, and is perhaps the most conveniently situated of all our residential squares, being little more than a stone’s throw from Trafalgar Square.
