Entitled – Rangoon. The base of the Grand Pagoda.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Rangoon. – We now proceed from Colombo to the chief city of Burmah, by a steamer belonging to the British India Steamship Company, calling at Madras on the way; the journey takes about six days. In 1852 Rangoon was a mere fishing village; to-day it is a city of about 200,000 inhabitants, and has a larger trade than any Indian port, save only Calcutta and Bombay. The above view shows some of the temples, idols, and decorations at the base of the Shaedagong Pagoda, the most venerable, finest, and most universally visited of all places of worship in Indo-China. Hence come Buddhist pilgrims from Cambodia, Siam, Corea, and Ceylon. It is situated about two miles from the Strand Road, and may be reached by steam tramway or by ticca-gharry. The stately pile stands upon a mound, partly natural and partly artificial, which has been cut into two rectangular terraces, one above the other; each side, as in all pagodas, faces one of the cardinal points of the compass. The upper terrace rises 166ft. above the ground level, and is 900ft. long by 685ft. wide. On the ascending steps are seen hosts of beggars and numerous stalls, where offerings of flowers and gold-leaf may be bought. The pagoda itself springs from an octagonal plinth in the centre of a broad, flagged space. It has a circumference of 1,355ft., and rises to a height of 370ft. From base to summit it is profusely gilt, and is surmounted by the usual gilt iron work ti, or umbrella, which is hung with jewelled bells. This particular ti was presented by the late King of Burmah, and it cost £50,000. There are four chapels at the base of the pagoda, and these are adorned by colossal sitting figures of Buddha.
