Entitled – Hong Kong. The Race-Course, from Morrison’s Hill.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Hong Kong. – So important a port could not long remain un-Anglicized. Here is a view of the big race-course, in the Happy Valley, where important meetings are held in February. Nevertheless, the Chinese at Hong Kong live their own lives, as though they had never seen a European. Here may one eat rose-leaf, shark-fin, and birds’-nest soups, tendons of deer, groper fish, preserved pumpkins, forcemeat balls, pigeon, fagots, and all the other strange dishes beloved of the Celestial; and here, too, may one see the money-changers seated at their counters, and the Chinese shop-clerks, industriously booking the sales with a camel-hair brush instead of a pen. The town of Victoria, with its granite-built veranda houses, is four miles in extent. Passing along Queen’s Road, the traveller is struck with the number of native shops on each side, which are filled with porcelain vases, camphor-wood boxes, lacquered furniture of every description, grass slippers, horn riding-sticks, and countless other quaint articles. Without doubt, Hong Kong is a fascinating place, more especially to the untravelled European. Among the many sights may be mentioned Government House, situated on the hill; the cathedrals, pawnshops, native theatres and native quarter, the granite rocks near the sea, the waterfalls, public gardens, and the cemetery. This last-mentioned place is situated, oddly enough, in the Happy Valley, where there is a granite memorial, 30ft. high, to the officers and men of the 59th Regiment, who died of fever in 1849.
