Entitled – Monte Carlo. Bird’s-eye view of the Principality.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Monte Carlo. – Hovering between France and Italy are certain tiny States, details concerning which read like excerpts from a Savoy opera. Many people have never even heard of San Marino, probably the oldest republic in the world, with its toy army of twenty-four doughty warriors. Much better known is the province of Monaco, nine miles from Nice, with its area of 5 and three-quarters square miles, and an army of 126 men. Down to 1848 this State included Mentone and Roccabruna, the whole being governed, appropriately enough, by princes of the house of Grimaldi. Mentone, as we have seen, broke forth from bondage, and was “on its own,” as the saying goes, for a whole year, but, intoxicated with the unaccustomed atmosphere of liberty, it staggered into the expectant arms of France. The fate of the other seceder, Roccabruna, is somewhat apocryphal. It goes without saying, almost, that everyone has heard tell of Monte Carlo, whose gaming-tables, we grieve to say not only support the reigning Prince of Monaco in eminent respectability, but also pay the entire expenses of the State. Powers absolute are, as it were, vested in King Croupier. What the novelist would do without Monte Carlo we are at a loss to imagine. Think of the fortunes lost and won; feverish gamblers staking their horses, carriages, and houses; timid ladies “plunging” with five-franc pieces (most profitable of all patrons); and daring women secretly pawning their personal ornaments with an obliging gentleman on the premises, in order that they may continue at the roulette tables, hoping that the adverse tide of Fortune will presently turn and recoup them a hundredfold. Every part of the Casino, of which the gaming-rooms are a part, is most luxuriously fitted up. The ceilings are elaborately frescoed, and the walls and niches are adorned with works of art. The games are in progress from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Cases of suicide are quietly hushed up; such things might affect the nerves of the patrons. Judging from what we saw in the chief gaming-room, a palatial, ballroom-like apartment, gambling is an absolutely ineradicable trait of human nature, for all Mr. Hawke may say to the contrary.
