Entitled – Prague. General View of the City.
From a Photo by Stengel & Markert, Dresden.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

Prague. – The ancient capital of Bohemia is five hours by railway from Dresden. It occupies a strikingly picturesque postion in the valley of the Moldau and on the adjacent hills. Prague is nine miles in circumference, and contains 186,479 people. There are many ancient and historical buildings in the city, and, rising above them all, is the grand and venerable Hradschin, with the Cathedral and a succession of palaces. The Zeltnergasse, Grosse, and Kleine Rings, the Carlsgasse, the Graben, and Ferdinand- Strasse and the chief business streets of Prague. One of the chief bridges, the Carlsbrucke, is 540yds. long, and rests on sixteen arches; it was erected between 1357 and 1507, and has mediaeval towers of defence at each end. The Hradschin may be considered the Capitol of Prague; the Hradschiner-Platz is a quadrangle bounded by the archiepiscopal palaces, the palace of Prince Schwarzenberg, and the palace of the Emperor Joseph. A railing separates the Hradschiner-Platz from the entrance to the Imperial Burg, which, with several other buildings, incloses the Cathedral. The latter has a tower that was once 520ft. high; a fire, however, reduced the tower to its present height of 323ft. Also in the Platz is a Capuchin Monastery, into the walls of which Prussian balls are built, in commemoration of the siege of 1757, when Prague sustained considerable damage. The view from the upper windows of the Abbey of Strahow, the highest site in the city, extends as far as the Giant Mountains. The Altstadt and Neustadt at Prague were once separated by a wall and moat. The former of these two contains the Bohemian National Museum and the Wenzels-Platz, a magnificent street nearly 175ft. wide and 750ft. long.
