Entitled – Zanzibar. General View of the Capital.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Zanzibar. – On leaving the fair but storm-swept island of Mauritius, the traveller reaches Zanzibar in ten days by the fine steamers of the Messageries Maritimes Company, by way of Reunion, Tamatave, Sainte Marie, Diego Suarez, Nossi-Be, and Mayotte Island. This is the terminal port of the Union Steamship Company’s present operations, and is called at once every four weeks by the intermediate steamers, which here connect with the steamers of the British India Company. Zanzibar is a territory on the east coast of Africa, and consists of the island of Zanzibar itself, the islands of Pemba and Monfia, and some points on the Suahili coast. The capital of this territory is also called Zanzibar; and we may mention that the island of that name is 55 miles long by 25 miles broad, and has an area of 625 square miles; the present population numbers about 200,000, chiefly Arabs, Suahili, Africans, and negro slaves. The Sultan’s present revenue is uncertain, but from over £200,000 it has fallen to probably little more than half that sum. The products are mainly cloves, which form four-fifths of the total clove crop of the world; cocoanuts, ivory, gum, hides, rubber, red pepper, grain, and wheat. The first clove trees were introduced in 1840 from Mauritius, and the average crop is now about 7,000,000lb., valued at £80,000. The harbour of Zanzibar is commodious and perfectly safe at all seasons, being protected on the north and west sides by four small islands, connected by coral reefs. The town, called Shanganny, is situated on a low point of sand, and is built with curious irregularity. It also possesses a wooden fort, which is far more picturesque than useful.
