Entitled -Madrid. The Puerta Del Sol.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Madrid. – From Cordova to the capital of Spain is a journey of about fourteen hours by the Alicante Railway. Madrid has a population of 472,228, and is situated on the waterless river Manzanares; this river by courtesy is spanned by many fine bridges, for which, at least during the summer, there is no need whatever. The city is built on a lofty plateau formed of several hills, at an elevation of 2,450ft. above the sea-level; Madrid is divided into thirty-eight parishes; and it has the highest death-rate of any European capital. Our view shows the celebrated square known as the Puerta del Sol – a mythical “gateway,” now the centre of the capital, but at one time the east entrance, on which the rising sun shone. The gate has long since disappeared, and this great oblong space is situated in the middle of the long line of streets which run east from the Prado by the Calle Alcala and Carrera de San Geronimo, and west by the Calles Montera and Carretas. The Puerta del Sol is therefore the centre of all the great thoroughfares of Madrid, and here also the various lines of tramways meet. On the south side is the Ministerio de la Gobernacion (Home Office), a square, isolated edifice built in 1768. The east side of the square is occupied by a handsome pile of buildings, of which the Fonda de Paris forms part. On this spot Murat perpetrated one of his terrorist butcheries on the 2nd of May, 1808. The influence of Parisian mode, by the way, is fast destroying the picuresqueness of the Puerta del Sol; and the capa and sombrero of the lounger are fast giving place to the silk hat and the fashionably cut overcoat. The Royal Palace at Madrid is one of the finest in the world; it forms a square of 470ft., and is 100ft. high. In the Paseo del Prado is the Museo, or famous Royal Picture Gallery, which contains forty-six paintings by Murillo and sixty-two by Velasquez.
