Entitled – Lincoln’s Inn.
Below the picture an inscription reads:
Lincoln’s Inn. – The frontage of the old buildings of Lincoln’s Inn facing Chancery Lane is about 500ft. in length. The grand old gate-house is a fine specimen of late red brick work of a Gothic type, and is now almost the only example of that style of architecture to be found in London. Cromwell’s secretary, John Thurloe, lived in Lincoln’s Inn from November, 1646, to November, 1659. The old chapel here possesses features of peculiar interest. It has been the opinion of some antiquaries that it is a restoration or reconstruction of a much earlier edifice; but there is evidence that proves conclusively that the present building was erected in the reign of James I. ; and, furthermore, that the old chapel was standing at the time of the consecration of the new one. It was built from the designs of Inigo Jones, and consecrated in 1623. Ben Jonson is said to have assisted with his trowel in the building of this chapel. It measures 60ft. by 40ft., and is about 44ft. high. The windows are filled with stained glass of very brilliant colours; and the carved work of the oaken seats is of very chaste design and superior execution. The crypt under the chapel, now dwarfed by the gradual raising of the ground, was built, like the cloisters in the Temple, as a place for students and lawyers “to walk in and talk, and confer their learnings.” The crypt was long reserved as a burial-place for the Benchers of the Inn. The chapel bell was taken by the Earl of Essex at Cadiz in 1596. Lincoln’s Inn Chapel was lengthened in 1882, two sets of fine Jacobean chambers having been pulled down to make room for the addition : much was done at the same time to “improve away” the beautiful design of Inigo Jones.
