Entitled – The Hop Exchange.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

The Hop Exchange. – At the eastern end of Southwark Street, near its junction with the High Street, and close by the Borough Market, stands the Hop Exchange, which was built about the year 1865, from the designs of Mr. Moore. This is a large and really magnificent range of buildings, many stories in height, in which are the offices used by the hop merchants of this district, and inclosing a lofty hall, in which the business of the Exchange is carried on. The interior of this fine hall is shown here. It is approached from the street by a short flight of steps and a vestibule, in which are some handsome iron gates; and it is surrounded by three galleries, which serve as means of communication to the various offices. In the rear are some extensive warehouses and stowage for hops. It will be seen that the railings of the galleries are appropriately decorated, and the hall itself is covered in with a glass roof. As everyone knows, the Borough is the head-quarters of the hop trade. In conjunction with this building, the visitor to that somewhat dingy hive of industry known as the Borough may visit the enormous brewery of Messrs. Barclay, Perkins, and Co., one of the greatest establishments of its kind in the world. This brewery occupies fourteen or fifteen acres of ground, and the present buildings date from 1832. The brew-house is 225ft. long by 60ft. wide. Within this large space are five complete sets of brewing apparatus; and each of the copper boilers cost nearly £5,000. On the south side of the brewery is an extensive range of stabling, spacious enough to afford proper accommodation for more than two hundred of those splendid dray-horses that are the brewers’ pride.
