Entitled – The Royal Mint.

Below the picture an inscription reads:

The Royal Mint. – On the east side of Tower Hill stands the Royal Mint erected in 1810, from designs by Johnson and Smirke, on the site of the old Cistercian Abbey of St. Mary of the Graces, and so extensively enlarged in 1881-2 as to be practically a new building. The Mastership of the Mint – an office abolished in 1870 – was held by Sir Isaac Newton (1699-1727) and by Sir John F. W. Herschel (1850-55). Permission to visit the Mint is given for a fixed day by the Deputy-Master, on receipt of a written application. The number of the party should not exceed six. The processes of coining are extremely interesting, and the machinery used is of a wonderfully ingenious character. In 1882 fourteen improved presses were introduced, each of which can stamp and mill 120 coins per minute. Among the other objects of interest at this fascinating place is a skeleton cube, each side of which is 33-3/8in. in length, showing the size of a mass of standard gold worth £1,000,000. During one recent year the value of the money coined at the Mint was £10,789,523, including 6,898,260 sovereigns, 4,426,625 half-sovereigns, 497,845 crowns, 1,792,600 half-crowns, 1,666,103 florins, 7,039,074 shillings, 7,350,619 sixpences, 3,076,269 three-penny-pieces, 8,161,737 pennies, 7,229,344 halfpennies, and 3,904,320 farthings; besides Maundy money, value £396, and Colonial money, value £328,658. There are branches of the Royal Mint at Melbourne and Sydney, and there are Mints also at Calcutta and Bombay. The cases in the waiting-room at the Mint contain coins and commemorative medals, including specimens of Maundy money and gold pieces of £2 and £5, never brought into general circulation.
