Entitled: Flowers and their visitors 3.

(1) Here is the wild arum, or cuckoo pint, with its spathe and spadix, or fleshy spike, suggesting the name
Jack-in-the-pulpit. Midges creep down the spadix, attracted by the disagreeable smell.

(2) This spathe is cut open to show the midges covered with pollen from an older plant, entrapped by a palisade of spikes.
As the insects fly about, the pollen is rubbed off on to the stigmas at the base of the spadix.

(3) This magnified view shows a midge pollinating the stigma, or mouth of the female organ, after which nectar is
given out by the stigma. One tiny pollen grain is sufficient to fertilise the ovary below the stigma.

(4) The ovules having been fertilised, are growing larger. The purple anthers have now burst and are shedding
their golden pollen on the midges.

(5) The midges being loaded with pollen, the palisade droops and the spathe withers, allowing the insects to escape.
They go off and visit another plant, repeating the process.

(6) The ovules, being fertilised, develop into the familiar red berries known to country children as lords and ladies.
They are the fruits containing the seeds.
