Entitled – Houses of Parliament.

Below the picture reads:

Houses of Parliament. – A remnant of the old building is St. Stephen’s Crypt; it is now used as a chapel for the residents in the Palace. The crypt was restored by Mr. E. M. Barry. It is 90ft. long, 28ft. wide, and 20ft. high; and the place is lighted by seven stained-glass windows representing the ministry and martyrdom of St. Stephen, St. John, St. Catherine, and St. Lawrence; and the legend of St. George and the Dragon. The east wall is panelled with full-length figures, on a gold ground, of St. Peter, St. Stephen, St. Oswald, St. Ethelreda, St. Edmund, St. Edward, the Confessor, St. Margaret of Scotland, and St. Edward the Martyr. The reredos is of marble and mosaic. The columns are of polished Purbeck marble, and the chapel will hold 250 persons. From the first landing of the staircase leading to St. Stephen’s Hall from Westminster Hall, a narrow door to the left or east leads to St. Stephen’s Crypt – or, more properly, the Church of St. Mary’s Undercroft. The low vaulted structure was erected by King Stephen, and rebuilt by Edward II. and Edward III. After having long fallen into decay, the crypt was thoroughly restored and richly decorated with painting and gilding – a blaze of modern glass and polished glazed tiles. While the crypt was being restored as the chapel of the House of Commons, an embalmed body of a priest holding a pastoral staff was found, and subsequently re-interred in the north cloister of the Abbey. It was supposed to be the body of William Lyndwoode, Bishop of St. David’s (1446), who founded a chantry here. The Crypt of St. Stephen, also called St. Mary’s Chapel in the Vaults, dates from 1292, and has escaped two great fires.
